We are officially two weeks into our Spring 2026 session (April 7 – June 8), and honestly, the energy on the hardwood has been nothing short of electric. While our high-performance tiers are grinding, it’s our League 1 (ages 6–8) sessions that have really set the tone this year.
As we go along in our coaching journey, we’re often asked: “Is it too early to start?” The short answer? No. In fact, this is the most critical window for development.
The Early Advantage: Beyond the Ball
Starting your child in basketball between the ages of 6 and 9 isn’t just about learning to dribble. You know, it’s about establishing a relationship with physical challenge and community. At the Eagles, we focus on three core pillars during these formative years:
- Accelerated Motor Learning: At this age, children are like sponges for “physical literacy.” Mastering hand-eye coordination and footwork patterns now creates a permanent athletic baseline that serves them in any sport they choose later.
- The Confidence Cycle: There is nothing like the “first basket” feeling. By starting young, kids build a sense of self-efficacy. They learn that they can tackle a difficult skill, practice it, and succeed. That confidence doesn’t stay on the court—it goes home and into the classroom.
- Genuine Enjoyment: Honestly, we want them to fall in love with the game before the pressure of high-stakes competition kicks in. When a child enjoys the process at age seven, they are far more likely to stay active through their teenage years.
The Coach’s Perspective: “I Wish I Started Sooner”
You know, it’s a common theme among our coaching staff. Several of our lead coaches—including some of our most elite trainers—didn’t pick up a ball until their early teens. They are coaching today because they’ve seen firsthand how much harder it is to “catch up” on those fundamental instincts later in life.
They push the League 1 program so hard because they want these kids to have the opportunities they had to fight twice as hard for. Starting young opens doors to high-performance tracks, club teams, and collegiate opportunities that become much narrower paths if you wait until age 12 or 13.
Roster Openings: Join the Rotation
While the season is underway, we still have limited openings for our 6–8 year old League 1 sessions across our Vancouver hubs. Whether you’re in Kitsilano, Oakridge, or East Van, there is still time to get your child into the rotation for the remainder of the Spring session (ending June 8). Don’t wait for “next season” to build the foundation. Give them the head start they deserve.
